The product

Eaters is a restaurant mobile app that strives to deliver mouthwatering sandwiches, vegetarian or not, to customers who are too busy to make their own food.

The problem

More and more people due to lack of time have not the chance to prepare their own food.

The goal

Design an app for Eaters that allows users to easily order and pick up their favorite dishes.

Research.

In order to make an efficient mobile app, I developed interview questions to conduct interviews to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research was working adults who don’t have time to cook meals. I used the insights to identify pain points the users were experiencing.

    Platforms for ordering food are not equipped with assistive technologies.
  • 3.
    Most participants said that they would like to track their order.
  • 4.
    The users need more payment methods.

Goals

Frustrations

1. Time-consuming app process. 2. No time for cooking my own meals. 3. Not enough payment options.

Ideation.

Taking the time to draft iterations of each screen of the app on paper ensured that the elements that made it to digital wireframes would be well-suited to address user pain points. For the home screen, I prioritized a quick and easy ordering process to help users save time.

Wireframes.

After ideating and drafting my paper wireframes, I created the initial designs for the Eaters app.

Low Fidelity Prototypes.

Using the completed set of digital wireframes, I created a low-fidelity prototype.

Usability Study.

I conducted two rounds of usability studies. Findings from the first study helped guide the designs from wireframes to mockups. The second study used a high-fidelity prototype and revealed what aspects of the mockups needed refining.

ROUND 1 FINDINGS

    Users want to make their order quickly.

    Users want more customization options.
  • 3.
    Users want a delivery tracker.

ROUND 2 FINDINGS

  • 1.
    The checkout process has too many unnecessary steps.
  • 2.
    “Build your own” functionality is confusing.

Takeaways.

Impact.

The app makes users feel like Eaters app really thinks about how to meet their needs.

What I learned.

While designing the Eaters app, I learned that the first ideas for the app are only the beginning of the process. Usability studies and user feedback in general influenced each iteration of the app’s design.

Next Steps.

  • 1.

    Conduct another round of usability studies to validate whether the pain points users experienced have been effectively addressed.

  • 2.

    Conduct more user research to determine any new areas of need.
